As Hurricane Beryl has reminded all of us in the Greater Houston area, it’s the season for strong winds, flooding rains, and piles of storm debris. While we hunker down for the remainder of hurricane season and work to get our yards and parks looking their best again, Environmental Services would like to provide you with a handy guide to dealing with fallen trees, fences, and everything in between.
Subscribe to Township Alerts to get the latest updates from The Woodlands Township during a natural disaster.
Who Should You Call?
First and foremost, it’s important to identify where the storm debris is, as this dictates who is responsible for its cleanup and removal. The first two cover public spaces – scroll to #3 for help dealing with debris in your yard.
- ROAD RIGHT OF WAY: Both Montgomery County and Harris County operate within The Woodlands Township boundary lines and are actively removing vegetative storm debris from road shoulders, medians and cul-de-sacs. Residents should contact their county directly or follow their social media page to get updates. All residents of Creekside Park live in Harris County Precinct 3; the rest of The Woodlands north of Spring Creek is in Montgomery County.

- YOUR FAVORITE PARKS AND PATHWAYS: The Township Parks department is actively managing storm debris and fallen trees on Township property. Trees that fall from the reserve onto private property should be reported to the Resident Care Center by calling 281-210-3800. Trees and natural debris removed from parks and pathways may be chipped into the surrounding forest to promote the natural decomposition process or piled in the right-of-way for county removal.
- PRIVATE PROPERTY: Debris and property damage are the responsibility of the property owner. Residents have a few options for removal – read on for a breakdown based on the material you are dealing with.

Who Picks Up Storm Debris?
I have yard debris such as leaves, twigs, and small branches less than 4” in diameter
Waste Management (WM) will collect yard debris that meets their curbside guidelines. However, due to the large amount of yard waste after a storm and an increase in the number of residences using the service, WM crews may be delayed in servicing your area – please leave material at the curb to ensure they have access to it as crews work diligently to collect it.
Place all yard trimmings at curb by 7 a.m. on your service day and at least four feet from you trash and recycling carts. No additional service tags required. Waste Management will not pick up your storm debris unless it complies with their curbside Yard Waste guidelines.
Branches, tree limbs and trimmings – follow the 4” x 4’ x 40 rule
- No larger than 4 inches in diameter.
- Trimmed to 4 feet in length.
- Tied in bundles, placed in an open container, or kraft (paper) yard bag.
- Weigh no more than 40 pounds.

I have storm debris such as branches more than 4” in diameter or a tree trunk, or I have a large amount of vegetation that I can’t fit in containers
County Assistance for Storm Recovery Debris Removal
During a declared disaster, each county has access to FEMA funding and will provide storm debris removal (see the video above for a brief overview). Residents must submit a Debris Removal Request form to either Harris or Montgomery County depending on your county of residence to comply with FEMA reporting requirements. The Woodlands Township is not responsible for storm debris pickup.
Montgomery County Debris Removal Request Form: Click here
Harris County Debris Removal Request Form: Click here
Storm debris must be placed curbside within two to three feet of the street edge in the county right-of-way; ensure that yard and vegetative debris (tree limbs/branches, pine needles, etc.) does NOT include any construction debris* (fencing, drywall, concrete etc.). Do not place debris in the road or in ditches as it impedes traffic and impacts drainage. Debris will NOT be collected from private property past the right-of-way. *Construction and any debris that is not yard/vegetative will not be removed by the county. The homeowner/property owner is responsible for removing this type of debris (see other options below).
