Each year, we come together to celebrate the selfless efforts of individuals who dedicate their time, energy and passion to make our community a cleaner, greener and healthier place. This year, it is with great pride that we announce Dawn Brubaker as the 2024 Environmental Services Volunteer of the Year. In a world where environmental challenges seem overwhelming, Dawn has consistently stood out as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that one person’s dedication can have a ripple effect on the community, the environment, and future generations.
Meet Dawn Brubaker, an environmental volunteer who is creating a lasting impact.
At the heart of every successful environmental initiative is a dedicated volunteer who believes in the power of change. This year, we are proud to spotlight Dawn Brubaker, an inspiring volunteer who passionately works to protect and restore our community.
Dawn teaches in the MBA program at the University of Houston-Downtown and is working part time on an industry-related project. When she isn’t working, she donates her spare time to helping the community. Dawn is an active member of Texas Master Naturalists, Montgomery County Master Gardeners, Native Plant Society of Texas and actively volunteers with Interfaith’s Veggie Village, food pantry and senior driving program (talk about being involved!) Through her contribution to these organizations, Dawn has become passionate about planting native species and growing organic crops for the enjoyment of the community.
“It is personally rewarding to give back to the community and make a positive impact on those who genuinely value the assistance.”
Dawn explains that her green mission is to “promote biodiversity and regenerative agriculture practices by assisting in the restoration of native plant habitats and supporting local organic agriculture initiatives.” She dedicates her time to planting and maintaining native species, educating about the importance of local ecosystems, and helping gardeners implement sustainable gardening techniques. Dawn explains that “through these efforts, I aim to foster a healthier environment by reducing chemical use and protecting natural resources for future generations.”

In 2024, Dawn dedicated nearly 70 hours of her time to Environmental Services alone. Whether it’s helping teach compost classes, prepping for our large events, creating native habitat or assisting with litter audits, Dawn has become a cornerstone of our Environmental Services team. When asked what inspires her volunteerism Dawn said, “It is personally rewarding to give back to the community and make a positive impact on those who genuinely value the assistance.”
We are beyond thrilled to honor Dawn as the 2024 Environmental Services Volunteer of the Year. Her hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to sustainability has made a significant difference in our department, our community and beyond. Through her actions, she reminds us that small steps, when taken with passion and perseverance, are what leads to change.
