As we settle into the new year, it’s a great time to reflect on the accomplishments of 2024 and make our 2025 resolutions a reality. If getting more involved in your community is on your list of resolutions this year, look no further! Whether you’re seeking a one-time program or an ongoing commitment, Environmental Services has a variety of volunteer opportunities fit for every family, group, company, and individual. If you are not a resident of The Woodlands and would like to volunteer, we invite you to join us as well! Read on to learn more about the difference our volunteers are making and how you can join them in having a lasting impact on your community!
This year, volunteers dedicated nearly 4,500 hours towards our green initiatives! With their help, we accomplished some wonderful feats in 2024:
- At our three Township-hosted races, we endeavor to keep as much waste out of the landfill as possible through recycling and composting; in 2024, our Green Team volunteers were a key part of making these events “zero-waste” by averaging a loss of only 8% of material to the trash bin! With your help, we can increase our diversion ever further in 2025.
- The Woodlands has over 250 miles of pathways and, this year, 108 different groups participated in Adopt-A-Path cleanups to remove 3,387 gallons of litter from our greenspaces! This volume is equivalent of 35 curbside carts, including 12 carts worth of recyclables.
- A key part of our Plant for Pollinators Program is to create and maintain diverse habitats to support native bees, beetles and the iconic monarch butterfly. Volunteers spent a total of 105 hours planting and maintaining conservation areas including, two new gardens to expand habitat for local wildlife.
- A key to saving our forests is removing non-native species that choke out trees and alter ecosystems. The Invasives Task Force led the way in removing 5,100 gallons of invasive species, including air potato vine, Japanese climbing fern, and deep-rooted sedge, donating 232 hours of sweat equity over 32 cleanup events.
- In a collaboration with your local municipal utility district (MUD) and Woodlands Water, Storm Drain Marking volunteers installed over 200 drain markers and passed out approximately 600 door hangars this year to educate our community how to protect our waterways from pollution.

Litter Collection & Audits
Type: one-time or recurring litter collection event, great for service groups or team building
Keeping The Woodlands clean, green and safe is a value shared by all our residents, making litter cleanups the most popular way folks chose to improve our community. As the local affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB), we provide the trash grabbers, bags, gloves and vests – all you need to do is collect the litter! Your local park is a great place to look for escaped trash along the treeline – or call us for location ideas that could use your help.
Take your collection one step further and help prevent litter in the first place! After your cleanup, conduct an audit of the material for submission to the KTB Texas Litter Database. This project is focused on tracking what kinds of litter are found in certain areas to help inform better messaging and reduce litter at the source. If your family or group is interested in conducting a cleanup or litter audit, please email the Township Environmental Services office at enviro@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov to set up a time and location.
