Trees are a significant part of what makes our community special here in The Woodlands. They give us shade, clean the air, and provide food and shelter for animals. Do you know how to tell what kind of tree you’re looking at as you meander through the woods? The answer is simple: look at the leaves.
Each tree has a unique leaf shape, texture, and pattern. By learning a few key traits, you can quickly identify many trees in your area and discover a new way of seeing the nature around you.
What to Look for When Identifying a Leaf
Use clues from the leaf, such as its shape, edges, and texture, to help you figure out what kind of tree it came from. The traits below are most helpful when starting your search.
Leaf Type & Shape
- Is the leaf needle-like or scale-like, like you might find on an evergreen?

- Is it broad and flat, like those on most shade trees?
- What shape is it? Could it be:
- Feather-like?
- Star-shaped?
- Triangle-shaped?
- Oval?

- Is the leaf lobed, deeply lobed, or does it have rounded or irregular lobes?
- A lobed leaf has clear curves or sections along the edge, like those on oak or maple trees.
- Is it a simple leaf, or does it have large leaflets as part of a compound leaf?
- What does it feel like? Is the texture papery or thick?
- Is the leaf small, or is it noticeably large?

Leaf Edge & Margin
- Are the edges smooth, toothed, or serrated?

Different Leaf Arrangement & Features
- Do the leaves grow in pairs across from each other, showing an opposite pattern?
- Do they grow in clusters along the branch?
- Do the leaves smell aromatic when crushed?
- Are they glossy or dark green in color?
- If the leaf is from a conifer, does it have soft, flat needles? Conifers are trees that usually stay green all year and have cones instead of flowers, like pine or cedar.
- Can you find any nuts nearby or berries growing on or under the tree?
